'An Unsquare Dance' is an exploration of the ideas and meaning behind these words as seen through the lens of a fashion collection. The concept is perceived in three ways: first as a literal reading (what do these words mean and what context do they provide.) Secondly, as a metaphorical interpretation (what does this phrase evoke and what does it mean to be Unsquare?) And lastly, through the context of the song which inspires the movement of the collection, the namesake song “Unsquare Dance” by Dave Brubeck, a 1960s rhythmic jazz piece.

This collection will use movement and silhouette to enhance the garments and project an idea of ‘An Unsquare Dance’, whilst leaving enough space for the viewer’s own interpretation.

The process in which this collection came to fruition has been markedly different for designer Joshua De Rossi. In an attempt to expand on his creative process

De Rossi was inspired by the improvised and spontaneous nature of jazz music.

Usually very precise and organised when designing, this posed a new obstacle for the designer. But this also allowed a new, extended period of exploration and refinement which could have been missed or skipped in earlier works.

The resulting work began in rough freeform digital sketches and lead to loose draping on the dress form.

Flower Scan

Early in the creative process De Rossi began developing motifs and print ideas to use on his garments. One breakthrough was made at this stage after trying to photographically scan wilting flowers.

In an attempt to create extra visual interest he started moving the flowers during the scanning process, resulting in the images seen above.

A harmonious representation of the collection was beginning to emerge.

A combination of explorative pattern cutting and manipulation, contemporary digital and screen printing build out the basis of the collection. Bring together the jazz influence and a developing understanding of current and past fashion movements and the designer has crafted, solely by hand, eight bodies of work in mens and womenswear. These garments are an exact representation of the designer's vision, style and aesthetic. This is 'An Unsquare Dance'.
